The ACDV Expert Group on « Standards » is glad to announce the European launching of the biobased content indicator.

Having this indicator and the corresponding logo available, industry has now a tool for communicating on an important property of its products: the biobased material content.

This is how the logo looks like:

The method is based on the determination of the Carbon 14 as for the determination of the biobased carbon ratio. It is completed by an elemental analysis, which determines the total amount of CHON present in the product. Nevertheless since isotopic analysis is only applicable to carbon, the biobased fraction of the other elements can only be reached by the way of a declaration, which is validated by the results of the analysis.

Several partners were involved in the development work of the methodology and the certification scheme: first of all the companies represented in the ACDV expert group on standards; the English NNFCC and European Bioplastics from Berlin; and finally SGS Multilab with their analytical experts and SGS – ICS on the certification scheme.

The first pilot phase during which the process will be validated will last for 6 months, until end of March 2012. During this period the secured plat-form for data keyboarding will be linked to the ACDV website. The plat-form guarantees confidentiality, traceability and security of data sent by the users.

Any company interested in participating in the pilot phase will obtain the European certificate on the biobased content for the tested products.
