Biobased Multifunctional additive for paints

JRS RETTENMAIER France

Description :
Derived from cellulose or algae, the JRS Rettenmaier range of additives for paints offers you biobased, biodegradable, environmentally friendly and multifunctional products.
There are three categories:
- ARBOCEL cellulose powders or fibres;
- ARBOCEL P xxxx cellulose gels;
- Alginates.

*** ARBOCEL cellulose powders or fibres:
ARBOCEL is a powder or a cellulose fiber used in particular in building chemicals. ARBOCEL is insoluble in water and is available in various grades differing in their length, thickness, purity…
The various advantages of ARBOCEL cellulose powders or fibers in paints or coatings are as follows:
1) Reinforcement agent: reduction of film tension, reduction of cracking, improvement of wet abrasion resistance, mechanical reinforcement
2) Rheological agent: pseudo-plastic or structural-viscous behavior, better resistance to splashing, anti-drip, easier application by spray gun
3) Matting agent: creation of a micro-rough surface and therefore reduction of shine, the more ARBOCEL is introduced, the higher the matting effect, can also be used in transparent application
4) Light filler: density of 1.3 g/cm3, recommendation to add 2 parts water to 1 part ARBOCEL to have the same workability
5) Possibility of increasing the open time by liquid transport in the fiber
6) Elimination of skin formation on the surface during drying thanks to uniform drying
ARBOCEL can be used in both interior and exterior paints, which can be sprayed with a spray gun or applied with a roller or a brush. For this, different grades are available.

*** ARBOCEL P xxxx cellulose gels:
They are available in a powder form which needs to be activated/dispersed with high shear forces alone in water.
The main properties of these gels are: opaque thickener, thixotropic and stabilizer. They particularly provide a high gradient viscosity but also a stabilizing effect of pigments and fillers without increasing the viscosity too much.
They also make it possible to partially or totally replace thickeners such as HEC or PU.
Finally, thanks to their thixotropic properties, these cellulose gels optimize pumpability and sprayability.

*** Alginates:
New in the JRS range, alginates are made from brown algae and produced in French Brittany.
The main properties are: transparent thickener, film-forming and it is possible to provide a barrier effect to water and oil depending on their formulation.
They are used mainly in food, cosmetics and pharma but also for several years in industrial applications including paints.

A study showing the function of an anionic polysaccharide, sodium alginate, as a thickener in paints is available through the link: https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0300944020312273 .
